Syros is the cultural and historical heart of the Cyclades, a place where every corner tells a story. Its roots reach back to the Kastri settlement of the Early Bronze Age, one of the cradles of Cycladic civilization. Later, the philosopher Pherecydes of Syros, mentor to Pythagoras, introduced early ideas of time and transformation, the very concepts that inspired Spira.
The island’s layered identity took shape over centuries: from the Venetian stronghold of Ano Syros, with its Catholic charm and winding alleys, to the grand vision of Ermoupolis, a 19th-century city built by refugees into Greece’s first industrial and maritime capital. Neoclassical mansions, marble squares, and the country’s first shipyards tell the story of a place that once led the nation in trade, education, and the arts.
